High Speed Boadband Update

I recently upgraded to faster broadband. My download speed has increased from 2.5 Mbps to 38 Mbps; my upload speed has increased from 0.4 Mbps to 8 Mbps. Here's the background....

  • according to the onlinconshire website we are not due for faster broadband until oct 2014 to mar 2015. However, when I did a phone number check rather than a postcode check (LN4 3NR), I found it was aready available. My ISP is Plusnet
  • faster broadband is usually FTTC or Fibre to the Cabinet (from the exchange). The connection between the cabinet and your home is the old copper wire system. You will only be able to get upgraded if the cabinet supplying your house is upgraded. Even then, speed will depend partly on the integrity and length of the copper connection
  • I was upgraded a few days ago. It involves an Open Reach engineer's visit to change the plate on your BT socket and connect a Fibre router, which then connects to you existing router or a new one supplied by your ISP
  • My connection and speeds took a few days to settle down and I had to turn off all routers and computers and turn them back on in a specific order to get it working properly. Apparently with some ISPs, you can get faster speeds almost immediately.

If you are keen for faster broadband, contact your ISP or do an online telephone check for availability here: http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome
NB: speed is measured in megabits per second ie Mbps; file size and disk size are measured in megabytes ie MB. there are 8 Mb per MB so you need a working speed of 8 Mbps to download a 1 MB file in one second.

I hope this helps. Good luck
